Since August 2015, Katie Johnston has served as the Associate Director for the President’s Leadership Program at Christopher Newport University. The President’s Leadership Program is a 4-year, comprehensive leadership education experience that includes both a curricular minor in Leadership Studies and corresponding requirements that make-up the co-curricular program designed to empower students to recognize their leadership potential and develop personal and social responsibility for the betterment of self and society. Additionally, she serves as an Adjunct Faculty member with the Leadership and American Studies Department. Prior to joining the staff at CNU, Katie work at the University of Georgia in the Center for Leadership and Service, where she advised several student organizations focused on servicing their campus and community.
Katie started her work in Higher Education at the University of Connecticut where she earned her M.A. in Higher Education and Student Affairs. While earning her degree, Katie work with the Neag School of Education to coordinate the admission and interview process for the Higher Education master’s program for over 350 applicants annually. Additionally, she worked with Student Affairs to administer several leadership development programs and facilitated teambuilding at the low-ropes challenge course on campus. In her free time, she volunteered as an advisor for HuskyTHON Dance Marathon. During her advisement over two years, students double their fundraising totals from $150,228 to over $304,375.
Before finding her way to work in Higher Education, Katie began her career with Management Solutions Plus, a full-service Association Management Firm, specifically focused on meeting and event management. Katie is originally from Woodbridge, VA and found her way to Hampton Roads to attend Christopher Newport University where she earned a B.A. in Communication Studies with a minor in Leadership Studies.
